Technical News Office – SBI (State Bank of India) customers are facing the threat of a new type of fraud. According to the ET report, SBI has asked its customers to be wary of frauds taking place in the name of the CBI and the Income Tax department. The bank said cybercriminals, posing as CBI and Income Tax officers, threaten customers with legal action and heavy fines and extort money from them. To trap customers in this fraud, fraudsters mainly make WhatsApp video calls to customers.
Gain customer trust by giving KYC details
To gain customer trust, crafty cybercriminals cleverly leak personal information and KYC details. Usually, this trick of scammers assures customers that the call is not fake. After that, the fraudsters tell customers that they have their tax information. Cybercriminals can easily obtain tax details from data and other public sources.
Showing fear of legal action
After convincing customers that they are right, cybercriminals begin their real game. In this, these fraudsters scare the victim by telling them a false story about tax evasion or any legal matter and fearing arrest. Customers are trapped in this false story and cybercriminals take advantage of this fear and commit major customer fraud. In some cases, fraudsters also try to know the Aadhaar and bank account details of the customer on the pretext of a fake application.
Demand a huge sum to avoid arrest
After completely tricking the customers, the cybercriminals themselves tell them how to escape from it and demand a huge amount from the customers in return. The fraudsters ask to transfer this amount to different bank accounts and also assure that this money will be returned to them once the investigation is completed.
protect yourself like this
1- Check the identity of the caller and the sender of the message. Real organizations don’t ask customers for sensitive information over the phone, text, or video calls.
2- Ignore threats of legal action from unknown numbers. The real organization will always contact you appropriately and give you plenty of time to respond.
