Technical News Office – Online fraudsters often use fake OTP messages to gain access to the device. Due to this, people often suffer huge losses. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued several guidelines over the past few months to combat fake calls and messages as well as better protect customers.
TRAI has asked telecom providers to implement message traceability, which could come into effect from December 1. Due to this, users may have to face delays in OTP delivery. As per TRAI’s Message Traceability Regulations, all messages sent by telecom companies will be traceable, to prevent misuse of the messaging system for phishing and spam purposes. According to the new rule, the message must be fully traceable from the sender to the recipient.
This decision was first announced in August and telecom operators were initially given until October 31 to implement these traceability processes. However, following demand from major companies like Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea and BSNL, this deadline has been extended till November 30.
Now, after the deadline expires, telecom operators will have to follow the message traceability directive. TRAI had allowed phased implementation of the rules, and operators were asked to warn entities not complying with the instructions by November 30. Messages from non-compliant companies should be blocked from December 1. Additionally, with the implementation of these traceability processes from December 1, there may be a delay in users obtaining the OTP. As a result, users may have to wait for a long time to get OTP for things like online banking, reservations, etc.
