Technical News Office – Google is already in the news due to the delayed release of Android 15. And now, reports claim that Google might roll out Android 16 sooner than expected. According to a report from Android Authority, citing references to patches from the Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) for Android 15 and the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), Android 16 could be released in Q2 2025. Google usually releases versions of Android in the third or fourth quarter of the year.
According to the report, earlier this year, Google adopted a trunk-based development model to speed up the development and release process. This template helps developers work on a unified master branch, marking specific features to be included in certain releases so that they can be deployed quickly. This accelerated platform stability and gave the confidence to launch Android 16 ahead of schedule.
When will Android 16 update be released?
Android Authority, citing information from the AOSP patch, claimed that Android 16 is expected to be released in Q25 (April-June 2025). If true, Google will be able to roll out Android before August, September, or October, which is common practice. This means that Android 16 could debut at Google IO 2025.
If this timeline is correct, it could help Google keep pace with competitors like Apple. Google has already been criticized for not rolling out Android 15 with the Pixel 9 series. Notably, this is the first time in 8 years that Google has not released any new software versions with Pixel devices. Android 16 is also expected to include API changes and new features, including Bluetooth capabilities. It will also ensure platform stability and feature improvements.
