Technical News Office – Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio has opened a new frontier for satellite internet service in India. The company has asked the government to hold an auction for satellite spectrum. Jio believes that this will create a better environment between satellite and telecom networks and users will get better service.
TRAI gave no response
Jio has written a letter to the government in this regard saying that global companies like Starlink and Amazon Kuiper want to launch satellite internet service in India. Jio argued that since telecom companies participate in auctions for spectrum, the same process should be followed for satellite services. The company has contacted TRAI i.e. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India several times in this regard but no response has been received yet.
Requirement to offer equal opportunities to businesses
Jio, in its consultation paper, asked the government to direct TRAI to formulate a clear and transparent policy for allocation of satellite spectrum. The company also criticized TRAI’s current method of spectrum allocation on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Jio says this method is not correct and does not provide equal opportunities to all businesses.

On this, Jio has clearly stated that it wants the government to put in place Tri spectrum allocation policies that are in compliance with the Telecom Act and Supreme Court orders. The company believes that the spectrum allocation process should be fair, transparent and competitive.
