Technical News Office – BSNL had unveiled its new logo and tagline last month. The government telecommunications company also launched its 7 new services, including Spam Free Network, ATS Kiosk and D2D service. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has currently launched the D2D i.e. Direct to Device service on a trial basis. In this, calls can be made even without a SIM card or mobile network.
What is D2D technology?
This service from BSNL connects mobile devices such as smartphones, smartwatches and other gadgets via satellite. This does not require any land mobile network. BSNL has partnered with Viasat for the D2D service. Its successful trial also ended a few days ago. Users will be able to make audio-video calls directly on the mobile device without a SIM card. In this trial conducted at the India Mobile Congress, BSNL made a phone call over a satellite network 36,000 kilometers away using an Android smartphone. This facility of BSNL can be used especially in case of emergency or any natural disaster. Using D2D technology, help can be sought in emergency situations and will contribute to the rescue of stranded people.
Jio and Airtel also in the race
Apart from BSNL, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea are also working on satellite connectivity service. At the same time, Elon Musk’s company Starlink and Amazon have also applied to provide satellite services in India. Currently, these two companies have not received approval from the Ministry of Telecommunications i.e. DoT. The government is currently preparing the spectrum allocation process for satellite connectivity. The Ministry of Telecommunications has sought suggestions from industry stakeholders regarding its pricing and distribution. After receiving the feedback, the spectrum allocation process will be completed, after which BSNL, Airtel, Jio and other companies can start their satellite services.
