Technical News Office – ANo more hassle of searching for luggage at the airport. Apple has introduced a new update in Find My Network for the convenience of its users. The name of the new feature is Share Item Location, which will help users find and recover lost and missing items. With this feature, users will now be able to share the location of AirTag or Find My Network accessories with third parties like airlines. The feature is currently available as part of the iOS 18.2 public beta and will soon be available to all users worldwide as a free software update for iPhone Xs and later. Let us explain how this feature will work…
How will the new feature work?
Users can share an item’s location using the Find My app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. When they send the link to someone, that person will be able to see the item’s location on an easy-to-use map. Every time the item moves, this map will automatically update and show when it was last updated. The shared location will no longer be available once the user retrieves their item. Apart from this, users can also stop sharing location at any time. The shared link will automatically stop working after seven days. To use this feature, the recipient must authenticate, that is, they must prove their identity via their Apple account or an email from the airline.
More than 15 airlines will use this facility
In the coming months, more than 15 airlines serving millions of passengers around the world will begin using Apple’s “Find My” feature to help locate lost or delayed baggage. This includes famous airlines like Aer Lingus, Air Canada, British Airways, Delta Air Lines and many others. More airlines will be added in the future. Furthermore, SITA, a company specializing in air transport technologies, will integrate this baggage tracking functionality into WorldTracer, already used by more than 500 airlines and ground staff in more than 2,800 airports around the world. This improvement aims to make it easier to track and recover mishandled baggage.
What is Find My Network?
Share Item Location uses a network called Find My, made up of over a billion Apple devices. These devices work together using Bluetooth technology to help people find their lost items nearby. When a device is lost, it can send a general location back to the network owner. In this process, everything remains private and secure. No one, including Apple or companies that make accessories, can see where the device is.
