In fact, the South Korean company LG presented the prototype of the world’s first truly extendable screen. Its special feature is that it can be enlarged and enlarged up to 50% without compromising on quality. The prototype features a 12-inch display that expands to 18 inches while maintaining a high resolution of 100 pixels per inch and full RGB colors. However, this isn’t the first time LG has offered an extendable display. The company also showed off a prototype in 2022, but its maximum elongation rate was only 20%.

Display can be changed to different shapes
LG calls its innovation “Ultimate Display Technology”. Unlike existing flexible displays that bend or twist, this display can actually be folded, curved and stretched into different shapes. Its advantage is that it can be used in many ways in different fields. The development is part of a national project led by LG’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, which was launched in 2020. LG Display leads a consortium of 19 research institutes involved in this project. Although the initial goal was an elongation rate of 20%, the team managed to double it using new techniques. These include a special silicone substrate material commonly used in contact lenses and a unique approach to screen wiring.

Nothing will happen even if you shoot 10,000 times
Durability is another feature. LG Display claims the prototype can withstand repeated stretching up to 10,000 times. Additionally, the display only has a 40-micrometer micro-LED light source. This ensures consistent image quality even in harsh environments with extreme temperatures or external shocks.

At the event, the company also demonstrated several display applications, including a curved automotive display that can be controlled by touch and a wearable display that can be worn by uniformed firefighters to access real-time information. In addition to its unique stretchability, the screen is thin, lightweight and can be affixed to curved surfaces such as clothing or skin. LG expects this technology to be widely adopted across various industries, from fashion to wearables to the mobility sector.
