This feature provides ChatGPT users with live information across the Internet, including news, live sports updates, weather updates, and stock prices.
Additionally, ChatGPT can now reveal the source of a question when you answer it, making it more trustworthy for users. OpenAI aims to provide faster and simpler search options than search engines from companies like Google and Microsoft and will be made available to all users in the coming months.
Google and Microsoft worried
After the launch of this search function, shares of Alphabet (Google’s parent company) and Microsoft fell. Alphabet shares fell about 2% and Microsoft shares fell 6%. Investors fear that this new search functionality will challenge existing services like Google and Bing. Notably, Microsoft has invested around $14 billion in OpenAI and this new feature could impact Microsoft’s AI services and Bing.
OpenAI also said that its search model is based on a special version of GPT-4, which also includes links to content such as news and blog posts. This feature is currently available to ChatGPT Plus and Teams users and will roll out to free users in the coming months. After this launch, ChatGPT’s search interface is more similar to other AI-based search engines like Perplexity and offers a cleaner experience than Google as it does not contain ads.
