According to media reports, CyberDost published that I4C and the Department of Telecommunications had compiled a list of people committing cybercrimes in Southeast Asia. Their WhatsApp accounts were then blocked. The aim of this move is to destroy the cybercrime network and strengthen India’s digital security. In May 2024, the country’s Interior Ministry formed a commission of inquiry after cybercrime incidents were reported in Southeast Asian countries like Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Laos . The committee’s investigation revealed that around 45 per cent of cybercrime cases in India are committed by people residing in South-East Asian countries. Due to lack of trace, the number of criminals increases, causing losses to the Indians.
Indians were lured and sent to Cambodia
According to media reports, the investigation revealed that when I4C traced the hackers’ modus operandi, it was found that cybercriminals lure people into making huge profits by investing. They trick them into playing online games and scam them out of money. They deceive people on dating apps into meeting the life partner of their choice and getting married. Apart from this, they also deceive people through fake trading platforms. In the latest case, young Indians were deceived into going to Cambodia to look for work. The Indians, who came to Cambodia out of greed, protested after being deceived and were arrested by the police. Steps have been taken to protect our citizens living in Cambodia, send them home and ensure their safety.
