Tata Docomo’s journey begins: When was the company established?
Before understanding the origin of Tata Docomo, it is important to understand why it is called Tata Docomo? Japan’s NTT DoCoMo has agreed to invest $2.7 billion to acquire a 26 percent stake in the telecom arm of the Tata group, after which the company was named Tata DoCoMo. Both the companies joined hands and Tata’s aim was to bring affordable plans to people through this telecom company. Indeed, at that time, telecom packages from other companies were quite expensive. In June 2009, the company introduced a plan with charging of one paisa per second for calls.
Before the per-second plan, the minimum delay was one minute. This means that if users wanted to talk for even 10 seconds, they had to pay a per-minute fee. Ratan Tata’s company was making a lot of profit from this plan, but Ratan Tata saw the benefit of people and started a per-second plan instead of a per-minute plan.
Tata DoCoMo had added 10 million customers to the network in just five months after its launch. Seeing Tata Docomo, companies like Vodafone Idea and Airtel have also launched per-second plans. Tata Docomo has also launched Diet SMS pack for users, in this SMS pack it has been decided to charge based on the number of characters.
Why was Tata Docomo closed?
Thanks to low customs tariffs, Tata Docomo has made its mark in the Indian market in a very short span of time. In 2010, this company also became the first private company to provide 3G service. But the company continued to suffer losses, leading NTT DoCoMo to exit the business in 2014.
