TRAI sounds the alarm for mobile users! Hackers have discovered a new way to cheat, if you want to avoid it, do it immediately

In some cases, scammers threaten to cut off essential services like electricity or internet or falsely claim that the victim is involved in illegal activities. Many times, by doing this, they achieve their goal. In recent times, many such cases have come to light in which money was extorted from people. In view of these cases, the Indian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has issued some warnings to the population.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has warned mobile users against a new type of scam. In such scams, the caller identifies himself to the Ministry of Telecommunications and threatens to disconnect the mobile service. This scares some people and they start doing what they say. Fraudsters find ways to extort money from innocent people. Often, they even succeed. Regarding this scam, TRAI clarified that “such calls are never made by the Department of Telecommunications”. TRAI has asked people to remain vigilant and report such calls using the Sanchar Saathi portal.

Increase in digital arrests in India
India suffered a financial loss of around Rs 120.3 crore due to ‘digital arrest’ scams from January to April 2024, according to government data. Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave this information during the 115th episode of Mann Ki Baat on October 27. Where he also mentioned the growing concerns regarding cybercrime.

Business scams top the list
Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center (I4C) CEO Rajesh Kumar said business scams topped the list of losses caused by cybercrime during this period. People have lost Rs 1,420.48 crore by falling prey to these scams. In cases like romance/dating scams, people have been defrauded to the tune of Rs 13.23 crore.

Digital arrest scams have become very popular lately. In this, appeals are made to people. Callers claim to be associated with government organizations and issue unnecessary threats. Scammers call themselves ED agents on video calls and say they are doing illegal work, if you want to avoid it, pay money. In such a situation, some people get scared and give money. However, they later realize that they have been victims of fraud.
